The South Coast region of Maine extends from the
New Hampshire border town of Kittery northeast to
Freeport and north to Sebago Lakes Region. Summer
visitors can explore expansive fine sand beaches,
retail outlet stores, specialty shopping, and the
cultural offerings of Maines largest city, Portland.
Here is a quick overview of the area and the major
cities, towns and regions within South Coast.

Harriet Beecher Stowe House:
This home of the renowned author is a National Historic
Landmark.

The Kennebunks: |
|
Seashore Trolley Museum:
The world's largest collection of beautifully restored
antinque electric trolley cars are on display and open
to the public. Rides, craftsmen demonstrations, visitor's
center, Museum store.

The Brick Store Museum:
Located on Main Street in Kennebunk, the museum was
founded in 1936 as a local history museum. Today, the
museum occupies the brick store and three adjacent restored
19th-century buildings. Extensive collections of artifacts,
textiles, and archives. Research library is also available
and open to the public.

Freeport Area: |
|
Desert of Maine:
Sand and minerals left behind by a glacier some 8000
years ago has created an interesting stop while visiting
Maine. While our beaches, rocky coastlines and pine
forests are famous, many are not aware that Maine is
also home to a growing desert. Open early May to mid-October.

|
Portland Museum of Art:
Maine's largest museum, the Portland Museum of Art features
18th and 19th European and American Art.

Wadsworth-Longfellow
House:
This boyhood home to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is full
of original family items. You can buy tickets and see
exhibits at the Maine Historic Gallery next door.

D.L. Geary Brewing Co.,
Inc:
Maine and New England's oldest microbrewery. Tours are
available by appointment. Gift shop on premises. Call
for more information.

Southworth
Planetarium:
Educational and entertaining shows for adults and children.
Open to the public for Friday and Saturday evening shows
and Saturday matinees. From October through March, they
offer Sunday matinees. Special matinees during school
vacations. Group shows arranged by appointment.
Scarborough Marsh Nature
Center:
Located in Scarborough, just southwest of Portland.
This nature center, run by the Maine Audubon Society,
offers opportunities for exploring and learning about
the plants and animals. Maine's largest saltmarsh.

Tate House Museum:
A large and elegant dwelling, Tate House was built in
1755 for Captain George Tate (1700 - 1794) and his family.
Tate arrived in the colonies around 1750 to act as Senior
Mast Agent for the British Royal Navy.

Wells Area: |
|
Wells Auto Museum:
Over 80 antique automobiles are on display at this popular
stop in Wells. Aside from automobiles, there are displays
of nickelodeans, antique arcade games. Antique car rides
available, as is a gift shop.
Rachel Carson Wildlife Refuge:
Open sunrise to sunset for bird watching and self-guided
tours. Located on Rt. 9 in Wells.

Laudholm Farm:
A historic saltwater farm, it is the focal point of
the Reserve. The farmhouse, which was restored, now
serves as a Visitor Center with a welcoming slide show
and five rooms of exhibits.

Scarborough Downs:
Visit Scarborough Downs Harness Racetrack and enjoy
the thrill of the competition while relaxing in the
