Lake is the largest freshwater lake situated inside
a single state in the northeast. From Greenville or
Rockwood, you'll view Mt. Kineo (1,806 ft) at it rises
from the Lake. Comprised of flint, Indian tribes traveled

Baxter State Park:
Purchased and donated by former Maine Govenor Percival
P. Baxter, this 200,000 acre tract of wilderness is
dedicated "to be forever left in its natural wild
state". The most prominent feature of the park
would be mile-high Mt. Katahdin (5,267 ft). Baxter peak
marks the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail.
A series of 45 other ridges and peaks, eighteen of which
rise more than 3,500 ft, provide over 75 miles of hiking
and climbing. Some trails are extremely rigorous and
you should consult the Park Headquarters for detailed
information about trails and safety considerations.
