Wanigan

The Wanigan's heritage is so old that the word itself is Ojibway Indian, "meaning man made hole." It has long been a favorite way to carry crucial gear and supplies on the water.

Our Wanigan was designed and patented in 1984 by Maine Guide James Hanna for use on river expeditions, but he soon found it even more useful in his own home. Meticulously crafted, the Wanigan ashore becomes a prized piece of fine furniture.

The Wanigan is hand crafted. Rugged and lightweight, construction of our Wanigans is similar to a traditional wooded canoe. Maine cedar ribs and planking are clinch-fastened with brass canoe tacks, then steam bent to fit the contours of a canoe. The cedar sides are braced with cedar cleats and fastened with bronze screws. The glowing matte finish comes from several applications of a penetrating, weather-resistant oil. And all work is performed by hand.

The beauty is enduring. The Wanigan has traveled from the frontier to the modern fireside because quality endures. The hand-oiled surface becomes more mellow and golden with age.
