Scenic Drives:
Blair Hill overlooking Moosehead Lake: Go straight at the blinking
light. Follow the Lily Bay Rd. to the top of Blair Hill, approximately
2 miles. Beautiful view of the lake all the way to Mt. Kineo
Big Squaw Mountain overlooking Moosehead Lake: Turn left at
the light. Follow Rt. 15 through town and up the west side of the lake.
Approximately 8-10 miles from town, you will see the sign to Big Squaw
Mt. on the left. Turn left, follow the access road approximately 2 miles.
Go to the second lodge. View from the hotel parking lot is superb. From
the top of the chairlift on a clear day, the exquisite panoramic vista
cannot be excelled!
Walden Farm Road overlooking Lower Wilson Pond: Go straight
through the blinking light. Take the first right at Pleasant Street.
Follow this street approximately 1½ miles. Before the crest of the final
hill, take the left hand paved street. Drive to the four way stop. The
airport will be on your right. Drive straight ahead onto Walden Farm
Road. This view of Wilson Pond displays Elephant Mountain as the backdrop.
This road is a dead end.
Ripogenus Gorge from the dam: Go straight on the Lily Bay Rd.,
to Kokadjo (approximately 18 miles). Continue straight on the main dirt
road. you will pass through the Bowater Paper Co. gate. Pay fee. This
road goes into the Golden Road. Bear right. Continue past tip of Caribou
Lake, Chesuncook lake and Ripogenus lake to the dam. you can cross the
dam and walk along the north side of the gorge for a short distance.
Scenic Waterfalls:
Wilson Falls, Big Wilson Stream. Elliotsville Rd., Monson: Follow
Rt. 15 south toward Monson. Just before entering Monson village, go
left on the Elliotsville Rd. Follow this road approximately 5 miles
to Wilson Falls campground on Big Wilson Stream. Turn left into campground.
Follow trail to Big Wilson Cliffs and Appalachian Trail to Little Wilson
Falls and Gorge.
Moxie Falls, Moxie Stream: Take Rt.15 south to Greenville to
the upper Shirley Corner. Go right into Shirley village. continue straight
through the town and follow this road which turns to dirt for approximately
12 miles. Turn left and go by the end of Moxie Lake. Take the first
road to the right. Approximately 1½ miles, turn right into well marked
parking area. park and walk to the falls.
Nesowdehunk Stream Falls: Follow directions to Ripogenus Gorge.
Continue on the Golden Rd. to Nesowdehunk Deadwater. The falls is at
the end of the deadwater. Go to the Abol checkpoint. Just beyond this
point, take the first right. This road follows the Penobscot river to
Abol Falls and Pockwockamus Falls.
