Spring and Summertime Activities
The season opens May 1st for lake trout, salmon and brook trout. The salmon run on the Moose River and other Moosehead tributaries is especially productive and trolling with live bait, streamers or lures is the usual method. Fly-fishing on the Moose and Kennebec rivers is recommended in June. Both have rapids, pools and pocket waters to provide plenty of action and can be fished from shore. Summer fishing on Moosehead is challenging and the surrounding streams and ponds are good for the novice, experienced or young fisherman and will provide a fun day fishing for those bass or brookies. Fall fly-fishing is rated as some of the best in the East and Moosehead can produce some lovely fish.
If you enjoy the outdoors and nature the Moosehead Lake area is a great place for a visit. The scenery is spectacular, photo opportunities are numerous and the moose are usually out and about. A hike to the top of Mt. Kineo offers a panoramic view of the surrounding mountain ranges and the pebble beach at its base is a favorite spot for picnics. Shuttle services are available to the mountain but you may want to rent a boat, and also explore our many coves and secluded beaches, listen to the cry of the loon, go swimming or just relax. Hiking trails abound in the area, white-water rafting is always an adventure, and tubing down the Moose River is fun for kids of all ages. Trails for mountain biking are numerous, golfing is available at the mountain and sea plane rides, museums and sight seeing excursions are all within a short distance.
Moose watching is a must up our way! Getting some great wildlife shots can be as easy as riding back roads, hiking last year's snowmobile trails or enjoying a wildlife cruise. And, if bird watching is your interest this is a great area for seeing loons, ospreys, ruby-throated hummers, bald eagles, peregrine falcons and so many other species!
