WELCOME TO
KENNEBUNKPORT, MAINE
Maine Resource Guide

Welcome! Today is: Saturday, July 04, 2009

Kennebunk is believed to have gotten it’s name from an Indian word meaning “long cut bank”, a likely reference to Great Hill at the mouth of the Mousam River which flows through it, and where Native Americans hunted thousands of years ago. Kennebunkport (“the port”) is nestled between the Kennebunk River and the ocean. It is part of the seaside communities known as the “Kennebunks”, which also include Arundel and Cape Porpoise. In the early 1600s, Europeans explored and settled along the Kennebunk River. They harvested the abundant timber, and built a thriving shipbuilding industry. As trade grew, and larger ships became necessary, and were unable to be accommodated by the shallow Kennebunk River, the shipbuilding industry waned, and was replaced by other industries. By 1872, tourists were coming via the railroad to swim and canoe in the river, and enjoy the peace and tranquility of the seaside villages. Kennebunkport has never lost it’s “old Maine” charm. Historical buildings along the river are home to charming gift shops, galleries, and fine restaurants. The picturesque Goose Rocks Beach is enjoyed by walkers of all ages. Visitors can experience much history in the old-world fishing village of Cape Porpoise, where they can watch lobstermen unload their catch, or take a cruise from the pier on a working lobster boat. Lobster pounds, fish markets, and restaurants are famous for their fabulous fresh seafood. As well as a summertime vacation place, Kennebunkport is an ideal getaway during any season. In Fall, it is bursting with brilliant colors. In Winter, if skiing is not your “bag”, you can cuddle up by the fireplace, and watch a gentle snowfall from one of the many charming inns or bed and breakfasts.
