Restored and decorated in 1986-87 by Alaskans, Carl & Cathy Heffentrager, the Inn is a labor of love, not only for the ornate Victorian architecture, but filling it with antiques and collectibles found throughout New England on treasure hunts!
Exquisitely turreted, columned and gabled, surrounded by bushes and many flowers, the Jeweled Turret Inn was built as a single family home for prominent attorney James S. Harriman and his wife Nell in 1898. The name of the Inn is derived from the grand stairway which is housed in a round turret with stained and leaded glass panels and jewel-like embellishments. This grand lady of the Victorian period possesses a beautifully
restored interior with unique oak, maple, fir and pine woodwork. One of the many exciting features is the den with its dark pine wood beamed ceiling and framed in rattan wainscoting, focusing on the grand fireplace of rocks and bark with pine framed top. This fireplace, one of four, is said to have been built of rocks from every state in the Union at the time the house was constructed. One can examine it for hours and not uncover every beautiful detail. The Inn is on the national
Register of Historic Places, and is located in the heart of town within walking distance of shops, restaurants and the harbor.
