This beautiful coastal Maine village is located on the shores of Casco Bay, two hours north of Boston. Once part of Yarmouth, it was called Harraseeket, after the Harraseeket River. The town of Freeport was incorporated in 1789. It is called --The Birthplace of Maine --, because it was in Jameson Tavern where separation from Massachusetts was debated by the colonists. Early industries included woodworking, shipbuilding, fishing, canning, and farming. With the advent of the railroad in 1849, Freeport Corner developed into the towns commercial center, which it remains today. Much of Freeports rich history has been preserved. Harrington House houses many exhibits and archives. At Pettengill Farm, exhibits of 19th-century farm life can be found, for all to enjoy.
